Since 2024, when this parasitic menace reinvaded Mexican territory, over 500 confirmed human cases have been reported in 2025 and 2026 alone.

A study published in Emerging Infectious Diseases analyzed 200 confirmed cases between April 2025 and March 2026, revealing that six deaths were directly attributed to the screwworm maggots' voracious feeding.
