Stormy Weather: A Perfect Storm of Factors Converge on Southern Manitoba

The summer storm that swept through southern Manitoba left 28,000 customers without power Thursday morning. The sheer force of the winds was described by Jim Hardy, a resident of Prairie Grove, as “like an earthquake.” Wind speeds reached up to 133 km/h in Brandon, and over 2,916 lightning strikes occurred within 50 kilometers of Winnipeg.

Environment Canada’s Terri Lang attributes the severity of the weather to high heat and humidity, which have characterized the summer so far. “The perfect convergence of factors has led to increasingly severe weather events,” Lang said. The region’s vulnerability to such storms is evident in the widespread power outages.

Arborist Pierre Duguay noted that this summer has been unusually busy with storms. “We’re not doing enough to mitigate the impact of severe weather,” he said, suggesting that perhaps more should be done to prepare for such events. Power outages are radiating outward from Winnipeg, affecting communities as far afield as Portage la Prairie and Treherne.

The phenomenon of “corn sweat” – moisture released by crops during full-growth – is contributing to the atmosphere’s instability. This process, known as evapotranspiration, is releasing large amounts of water vapor into the air. Lang explained that this is contributing to severe weather events, highlighting the interconnectedness of ecosystems.

As the region waits for power to be restored and assesses the damage left in the storm’s wake, it’s clear that southern Manitoba’s recent experience with severe storms serves as a stark reminder that proactive measures are needed to address the root causes of such events. The question remains: Are we investing enough in infrastructure and emergency preparedness measures?
