The tech giants’ push for sprawling data centers is driving the need for skilled tradespeople. Nvidia estimates that by the end of the decade, global capital outlays will reach $7 trillion, underscoring the scale of investment in AI infrastructure. Huang’s comments at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, earlier this year sparked interest. He noted that plumbers, electricians, construction workers, and steelworkers would be in high demand to construct chip, computer, and AI factories, with salaries over $100,000 without a college degree.
This narrative is at odds with warnings from other CEOs who caution about the lack of skilled workers. Ford’s Jim Farley has repeatedly sounded the alarm about AI hollowing out traditional white-collar entry points, arguing that the education system continues to funnel students toward four-year degrees and neglect alternative paths. He warns that this risks creating a generation of students ill-equipped for the changing job market.
The McKinsey report cited by Huang provides context to this debate. It estimates that between 2023 and 2030, there will be a need for an additional 130,000 trained electricians, 240,000 construction laborers, and 150,000 construction supervisors in the U.S. alone, highlighting the scale of demand for skilled tradespeople.
Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase, has also touted six-figure shipyard jobs as the new “American Dream.” Meanwhile, CEOs like Ron Vachris are betting on human workers being elevated by tech, rather than replaced.
The creation of high-paying jobs in skilled trades is not merely an opportunity; it’s a recognition that the traditional education system has failed to prepare students for the changing job market.
